The Missileer Field Guide
There is a radio network that has been broadcasting coded messages, in the clear, every day, for decades. Anyone with a shortwave receiver can hear it. Almost nobody can read it. This guide explains what it is, how to hear it yourself, and how we built a desk gadget that listens to it around the clock.
Everything here comes from public, citable sources — Air Force public affairs, the National Park Service, and well-documented hobbyist references. Where the public record ends, we say so.
The guide
- What is an Emergency Action Message? — the broadcasts, the format, the network behind them, and why the content is unreadable by design.
- Hear it yourself — from a free browser WebSDR to a $40 receiver on your desk. A practical starting guide.
- Inside our receive station — the antenna-to-device pipeline behind Missileer, including the honest engineering trade-offs.
- Sources: what's cited, what's invented — our publication posture, in full.
Missileer is the HFGCS edition of the Valar Scopes line — a desk monitor that lights up when a real Emergency Action Message goes out over the air. See Missileer →
